h for helicopter: a tall stem and arch
Colour a helicopter while practising a tall lowercase h. Listen to its first sound, follow the adult model and trace its arch; copying the long word is optional.
FIVE WAYS TO TRY ONE LETTER
A tall stem makes h different from n. Begin beside the helicopter, follow a large h or find it among n and b. Hat, hen and a hopping child lead into a hen nestled inside a hat; an adult names the pictures, and copying words is optional.
One activity per page, in the order below. Choose the PDF for your A4 or US Letter paper. There is no cover or blank page.

Colour a helicopter while practising a tall lowercase h. Listen to its first sound, follow the adult model and trace its arch; copying the long word is optional.

Follow the tall stem and rounded shoulder of lowercase h beside a helicopter. Use the start point and arrows with an adult, then trace or make a few roomy attempts.

Look for six h letters among n and b. Compare the tall h stem with the shorter n and notice that the shoulder of h stays open at the bottom.

Name a hat and hen, then talk about the child taking a hop on one foot. Point to initial h in each word; tracing and adult-supported copying are optional.

A hen nestles inside a broad hat, leaving open spaces to colour. Practise lowercase h and listen to hen and hat with an adult; whole-word copying is optional.
Bring the tall stem down to the writing line. Travel back up part of that stem, curve over the shoulder and finish down. Follow the same start and return in the large model and smaller tracing; the numbered arrows show movement directions, not separate pencil lifts.
Compare h with n on the finding page. Both have one open shoulder, but n begins lower. The b has a closed bowl rather than an open shoulder. Look for six h letters while an adult names the shapes.
Say hat and hen, then name the action in the third picture: the child is taking a hop on one foot. An adult can demonstrate a small safe hop or describe it without asking the child to move. Point to the first h in each word. Finish with the hen-in-a-hat scene, tracing just h or colouring without copying any whole word.
For uppercase and lowercase together, try the Hh alphabet colouring and tracing sheet. These five activities focus on lowercase h, including hat, hen, hop. See printing and paper-size help when choosing a PDF.
