e for elephant: across and around
An elephant accompanies the small looping movement of lowercase e. Explore its short first sound with an adult, trace the model and make a few attempts; elephant copying is optional.
FIVE WAYS TO TRY ONE LETTER
Listen to bed, pen and hen with an adult: short e is in the middle of these words. Begin with the elephant movement sheet or make a large looping e, then compare it with c and o. A hen beside a bed finishes the pack; copying whole words is optional.
One activity per page, in the order below. Choose the PDF for your A4 or US Letter paper. There is no cover or blank page.

An elephant accompanies the small looping movement of lowercase e. Explore its short first sound with an adult, trace the model and make a few attempts; elephant copying is optional.

Begin lowercase e with its short middle line, then curve around. Follow the large model with a finger before tracing or trying a few letters beside the elephant.

Look for six lowercase e letters among c and o. An adult can help compare the short middle line, open c curve and closed o before the child circles or colours each e.

Bed, pen and hen each have short e in the middle. Name the pictures with an adult and notice the marked middle letter; whole-word tracing and copying are optional.

A hen stands beside a bed in this colouring scene. Say hen and bed with an adult, listen for short e in both words and choose whether to trace e; word copying is optional.
Say bed slowly without changing your usual pronunciation, then point to the middle e. Repeat with pen and hen. The pictures help an adult introduce the words; they are not a test of independent reading.
To make e, begin with the short line across the middle, curve up and around, then finish with the lower opening. Follow the marked start with a finger before using a pencil. The large model and smaller tracing share the same movement.
On the finding page, compare the cross-line of e with the open c and closed o. Find six e shapes among twelve letters. The hen-and-bed scene offers another way to talk about the same middle sound, with just the letter or an optional whole word to trace.
For uppercase and lowercase together, try the Ee alphabet colouring and tracing sheet. These five activities focus on lowercase e, including bed, pen, hen. See printing and paper-size help when choosing a PDF.
