r for rainbow: a short stem and shoulder
A rainbow picture accompanies the short stem and shoulder of lowercase r. An adult can demonstrate the movement before tracing; the picture-word writing is optional.
FIVE WAYS TO TRY ONE LETTER
Meet a rat, rug and ram while making lowercase r's short open shoulder. The rainbow main sheet leads to a large movement, finding r among n and v, little words and a rat-on-a-rug scene.
One activity per page, in the order below. Choose the PDF for your A4 or US Letter paper. There is no cover or blank page.

A rainbow picture accompanies the short stem and shoulder of lowercase r. An adult can demonstrate the movement before tracing; the picture-word writing is optional.

Follow a large lowercase r beside the rainbow. An adult can model the movement before finger tracing and a few pencil attempts. Whole-word copying is optional.

Find six lowercase r letters among n and v. Compare their shapes before circling the matches, tracing and trying a few letters on the guides.

Name rat, rug, ram with an adult and find the first written r in each label. The pictures support talk; tracing or whole-word copying is optional and adult-supported.

Colour rat on a rug and practise lowercase r. Name rat and rug together; copying either word is optional with an adult.
Draw the short stem down, return up it and curve into a small shoulder. It stays open on the right rather than forming n's rounded arch. A finger can follow the large model before a pencil traces the smaller row.
The finding grid places six r letters among n and v. The n has a fuller shoulder and second downstroke; v is pointed. An adult can name each shape while the child points or circles.
Name the rat, rug and ram together, then listen for the first sound in the way your family or school says it. The rug in the final scene has room for colour. Whole-word copying is an optional extra, not the starting task.
For uppercase and lowercase together, try the Rr alphabet colouring and tracing sheet. These five activities focus on lowercase r, including rat, rug, ram. See printing and paper-size help when choosing a PDF.
Return to the letter practice shelf to choose another available activity. Follow the child’s interest and stop when they have had enough.
