q for queen: a bowl and a descending stem
A queen picture accompanies lowercase q with its rounded bowl and long stem. Say queen together and notice qu at the start, then trace q and use the blank guides; word copying is optional.
FIVE WAYS TO TRY ONE LETTER
A queen and quilt give two familiar qu words. Follow lowercase q's round bowl and descending tail, find q among g and p, then let an adult read queen, quit and quiz aloud. Copying a whole word is optional.
One activity per page, in the order below. Choose the PDF for your A4 or US Letter paper. There is no cover or blank page.

A queen picture accompanies lowercase q with its rounded bowl and long stem. Say queen together and notice qu at the start, then trace q and use the blank guides; word copying is optional.

Follow a large lowercase q beside the queen. An adult can model the movement before finger tracing and a few pencil attempts. Whole-word copying is optional.

Find six lowercase q letters among g and p. Compare their shapes before circling the matches, tracing and trying a few letters on the guides.

A queen picture, an open palm stopping a toy car game for quit, and a star-shape question card for quiz help an adult name three written qu words. Trace or copy only with support; these are vocabulary examples, not a CVC set.

Colour queen with a quilt and practise lowercase q. Name queen and quilt together; copying either word is optional with an adult.
Start around the bowl, then take the right stem below the writing line and finish its small tail. The large model gives the descender space; its start point and arrows show the movement before smaller tracing.
On the finding page, compare q with g and p. All can descend, so look at the position and shape of the bowl and tail. Point to six q letters before circling them. The words page uses written qu in queen, quit and quiz; it does not present an isolated q sound or promise that these are simple CVC words.
The open palm shows someone stopping a toy car game: quit means stop. On the quiz card, an adult asks the name of the star shape. Say queen and quilt while colouring the final scene, and point to qu in both labels. Trace q alone or try a word with help only if the child wants to.
For uppercase and lowercase together, try the Qq alphabet colouring and tracing sheet. These five activities focus on lowercase q, including queen, quit, quiz. See printing and paper-size help when choosing a PDF.
