FIVE WAYS TO TRY ONE LETTER

Lowercase p practice

The penguin page introduces a stem that travels below the writing line. Make a large p, compare it with q and b, name pen, pig and pot, then colour a penguin beside a cooking pot. An adult can name the pictures; copying words is optional.

Give the stem room below the line

Begin at the marked point and draw down below the writing line. Return up that stem, then curve right and round to close the small bowl. Follow the arrows slowly with a finger before trying the movement with a pencil.

In the finding grid, p has its stem on the left and its bowl on the right. The q has a right-side stem and tail; b is tall above the line. There are six p shapes to find among twelve letters.

Name the pen, pig and cooking pot. Listen for p at the start of each word, then point to its first written letter. The final penguin scene offers colouring and a few p attempts even if the longer word penguin stays uncopied.

For uppercase and lowercase together, try the Pp alphabet colouring and tracing sheet. These five activities focus on lowercase p, including pen, pig, pot. See printing and paper-size help when choosing a PDF.

Return to the letter practice shelf to choose another available activity. Follow the child’s interest and stop when they have had enough.
