j for jellyfish: a hook and a dot
Colour a jellyfish and follow lowercase j below the writing line. Trace the descending hook, add the separate dot and try a few letters; copying jellyfish is optional.
FIVE WAYS TO TRY ONE LETTER
The hook of j needs space below the line, and its dot comes after the stem and curl. A jellyfish sheet and large model show the movement. Find j among i and g, explore jam, jet and jug, then colour a jug beside a jam jar; whole-word copying is optional.
One activity per page, in the order below. Choose the PDF for your A4 or US Letter paper. There is no cover or blank page.

Colour a jellyfish and follow lowercase j below the writing line. Trace the descending hook, add the separate dot and try a few letters; copying jellyfish is optional.

Give the hook of lowercase j space below the line. Follow the stem and curl before lifting to add the dot; a jellyfish picture and lower tracing support a few large attempts.

Find six dotted j letters among i and single-storey g. Compare the descending hook with the short i stem and the round bowl of g, leaving clear space between rows.

Jam, a jet aeroplane and a jug introduce initial j with an adult. The target marks leave the hooks visible; tracing or copying a whole word is optional.

A handled jug stands beside a jam jar with an open lid and spoon. Colour the scene, practise j and add its dot after the hook; jug and jam copying is optional.
Start at the marked point on the short stem. Draw down past the writing line and curve left at the bottom. Lift the pencil before placing the separate dot above. The arrows show the downward and curling directions; the dot is the final action, rather than part of the hook.
On the finding sheet, both j and i have dots. Follow the stem to see which letter reaches below the line. The single-storey g also descends but has a round bowl instead of a dot. The extra row spacing keeps each hook and bowl separate.
An adult names the jam, jet aeroplane and jug while pointing to the first j in each word. Its underline sits below the hook. In the final scene, say jug and jam together before colouring the objects. Tracing individual letters, following a large movement with a finger or leaving the words uncopied are all choices.
For uppercase and lowercase together, try the Jj alphabet colouring and tracing sheet. These five activities focus on lowercase j, including jam, jet, jug. See printing and paper-size help when choosing a PDF.
