FIVE WAYS TO TRY ONE LETTER

Lowercase d practice

Round the bowl first, then make the tall right-hand stem of d. The duck worksheet, enlarged movement and letter-finding page lead into dog, dad and dig, followed by a digging dog scene. An adult names the pictures, including the father with a child; whole-word copying is optional.

Around first, then up and down

Start near the top right of the bowl and curve anticlockwise around it. Travel up the right-hand stem, then come down to the writing line. This starting movement differs from b, which begins with its tall left stem.

On the finding page, compare d with b and p. The p reaches below the writing line, so there is extra space between the rows. Point to the right stem of each of the six d letters before circling or colouring them.

Say dog, dad and dig together and listen for initial d. An adult can call the pictured father dad. The first d is marked in dad, which also ends with d; the digging scene supplies a picture cue for the action word dig.

For uppercase and lowercase together, try the Dd alphabet colouring and tracing sheet. These five activities focus on lowercase d, including dog, dad, dig. See printing and paper-size help when choosing a PDF.

Return to the letter practice shelf to choose another available activity. Follow the child’s interest and stop when they have had enough.
