FIVE WAYS TO TRY ONE LETTER

Lowercase a practice

Make a single-storey lowercase a with an adult, then find its shape among o and d. Cat, map and bag put short a in the middle of each word; a cat with a bag finishes the five-page pack. Adults can read the words aloud, and copying is optional.

One activity per page, in the order below. Choose the PDF for your A4 or US Letter paper. There is no cover or blank page.

Around the bowl, then down

Start near the upper right of the bowl. Curve left and around, return to the upper right, then draw the short stem down to the writing line. The marked start and numbered arrows show this as one pencil path.

On the finding page, look for six a letters among o and d. The o has no right stem; the d has a tall one. An adult can name each shape before the child circles or colours it.

Say cat, map and bag together and listen for short a in the middle. Point to that middle letter in each printed word. The child can colour the cat and bag or trace a few a letters without reading or copying any whole word.

For uppercase and lowercase together, try the Aa alphabet colouring and tracing sheet. These five activities focus on lowercase a, including cat, map, bag. See printing and paper-size help when choosing a PDF.

Return to the letter practice shelf to choose another available activity. Follow the child’s interest and stop when they have had enough.
